This session will show how this unique wastewater treatment plant construction project came about, provide the context in which it was carried out and discuss its effectiveness. Finally, it will address the following question: in the light of experience to date, can this approach be considered a success? Do we need to do more? Who should we be working with?
17 March 2025
10h-11h CET
The session is open to anyone working in the field of water, sanitation and hygiene in humanitarian contexts.
Expected outcomes:
- Case study of development in a country in active conflict.
- Explore how a project, initiated during an emergency response, could serve as a strong example of how such initiatives can be scaled up and adapted to longer-term development contexts and can operate on a cost recovery basis..
- Discuss the need for humanitarian organisations to play a more active role in addressing the lack of long-term investment in WASH infrastructure.
- The support and funding arrangements needed to build infrastructure that protects lives indirectly rather than directly.
- Sharing recommendations for working in the humanitarian and development spheres.
