Environmental Mainstreaming in Humanitarian Interventions, 2020

Published on 23 July 2020

“Environmental Mainstreaming in Humanitarian Interventions” is a report led by the UNEP/OCHA Joint Environment Unit, the Environment Community of Practice of the Global Shelter Cluster and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). It looks at good practices, lessons learned and challenges with mainstreaming the environment in humanitarian action. The report explores the issue of environmental mainstreaming through surveys and stakeholder interviews, analysing the extent to which humanitarian organisations have adopted policies that relate to the environment and the extent to which environmental organisations have adopted policies that relate to humanitarian interventions.

In this report, key findings include that while the majority of humanitarian organisations surveyed have or are currently developing environmental policies, these are often not consistently implemented, monitored and/or evaluated. Thus, the impact in practice remains unclear.
