Life cycle assessment of food packaging, PAM and JI, September 2024

Published on 20 September 2024

This report, developed by the Joint Initiative on Sustainable Packaging Waste Management for Humanitarian Aid and the WFP, aims to foster collaborative learning by providing humanitarian organisations with an example of an effective methodology for conducting a streamlined life cycle assessment (LCA) of packaging adapted to humanitarian aid contexts. This report aims to improve understanding of the requirements, benefits and limitations of simplified LCA. It estimates the environmental impact of corrugated cardboard, three types of metallised laminated sachets used for the distribution of ready-to-use supplementary foods (RUSF): enriched biscuits and Super Cereal Plus (SC+); and three types of packaging for the distribution of vegetable oil: HDPE jerrycans, PET bottles and tinned steel cans.
