As part of its study on regional waste management capacities, PIRAC developed a tool to estimate the quantities of tertiary and secondary packaging waste for its emergency operations. This simple Excel tool is adapted to the humanitarian context, for organisations using IFRC family kits.
Tertiary packaging, or transport packaging, is used to group together large quantities of products and transport them from point A to point B. It includes pallets, cartons and plastics (Polypropylene PP, Low Density Polyethylene LDPE).
Secondary packaging, or grouping packaging, covers primary packaging in order to group a certain number of items together to make a batch. It includes plastics (polypropylene PP, low-density polyethylene LDPE/high-density polyethylene HDPE), cardboard and paper.
