In small island states, due to the fragility of their ecosystems, waste management is an existing challenge. As part of Ready 360°/3 Oceans – Result 4, PIRAC carried out a study to assess the management and treatment capacities of waste generated by emergency operations in the America-Caribbean zone. This study led to solutions that emergency operators can implement to reduce and eliminate the waste generated by their operations, as part of an approach to humanitarian aid that has less impact on the environment.
This study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of current waste management practices and proposes specific recommendations for improvement. One of the main outcomes is the identification of best practices to be integrated into emergency response operational processes. Through this project, PIRAC aims to demonstrate that it is possible to operate with less environmental impact despite severe humanitarian constraints, particularly the urgency of operations.
