Podcast “Humanitarianism Taken At Its Word”: Carbon Neutrality: Info And Hoax?, June 2023

Published on 6 July 2023

This podcast is part of Groupe URD’s “Humanitarianism taken at its word” series. A short programme that examines the aid sector through its major words. Each word is dealt with from a number of angles, and each programme features a guest who specialises in the issue in question.

This third and final instalment in the series on greenwashing tackles the issue of “carbon neutrality”, a concept we hear more and more about, without really knowing what it covers… or hides! To begin with, let’s look at where the humanitarian sector stands in 2023.

Several charters have been drawn up and signed by a large number of players in international solidarity, in France and around the world, but concrete actions are slow to be put in place. How can we translate into real progress the content of the Declaration of Commitment by Humanitarian Organisations on Climate Change, launched in December 2020, or the Charter on Climate and Environment for Humanitarian Organisations, launched in May 2021, or the Donors’ Declaration on Climate and Environment, launched in March 2022 and signed by all EU countries?

Today we talk to Aline Hubert, Groupe URD’s Environment Officer, about the many issues surrounding carbon neutrality.
